WHAT IS IKO-IKO?
IKO-IKO is named after a traditional chant
of the Mardi Gras Indians*:
"Jockamo fee-no an dan day, Jockamo fee-na-nay"
"Jockamo" means "jester"
and "an dan day" means "on that day"(Mardi
Gras) --
the phrase, more or less, means "Jester won't
clown on that day"
*The Mardi Gras Indians are social clubs who
hand-make elaborate "Indian"
costumes and parade for Mardi Gras.
When they cross paths with another tribe,
they meet and greet each other, comparing their tribal songs, dance and dress.
"Looking good Baby,
looking good!"
